Madeline the Intern
This month’s post will be a little different- we are featuring Madeline, our Intern! Madeline has been working with the Southeast Michigan Doula Project since September as a part of the University of Michigan Women’s Studies course Nonprofit Management. Madeline is a senior at the University of Michigan concentrating in Women’s Studies. Her sophomore year she took a class called Perspectives on Women’s Health, which brought her passion for birth to life. After taking this course, Madeline completed a three-day doula training a few summers back and has been looking to be involved at a doula organization ever since. Madeline says working with the Southeast Michigan Doula Project has been very rewarding!
Through her internship, Madeline has worked to create and distribute flyers, manage Facebook, contribute to the SMDP website, and develop a Cultural Awareness Training for our doulas. The Cultural Awareness Training’s purpose is to better educate our doulas about social factors which influence a mother’s birth experience, such as income, race, age, and past experience with sexual abuse. Hopefully this training will help Southeast Michigan Doula Project doulas to empower their clients and create better birth outcomes. Madeline says this internship helped her develop many skills, such as time management, research, and applying class concepts to real nonprofit organizations.
Madeline plans to continue her volunteer work at Southeast Michigan Doula Project through serving on the board. Madeline will graduate in May from the University of Michigan and plans to pursue a career in nonprofit work in the southeast Michigan area. Madeline wishes to thank the Southeast Michigan Doula Project for a great semester and she cannot wait to continue working with them in the future!
