Birth Matters: Some Things to Watch
This week in Birth Matters we are talking about some great things to watch, whether you are currently pregnant, a mother or just looking for something to watch this weekend!
One of the most well known and influential documentaries relevant to Birth is The Business of Being Born. This film encourages the contemplation of standard medical interventions and for many, is what inspired them to become doulas and midwifes. (There is a sequel called More Business of Being Born, just incase you watch it and need more!)
Another classic documentary is Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives. This film follows the iconic life and work of Ina May Gaskin, a pioneer in childbirth!
Speaking of Ina May Gaskin she has an amazing Ted Talk about how fear can effect can effect the course of labor and childbirth, check it out!
If you are more interested in the scientific and physiological happenings of pregnancy, labor and childbirth, check Discovery Channel's The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy.
While searching for films that provided a physiological account of pregnancy and birth, I came across The Great Sperm Race, a show I watched in high school health class! It is definitely an entertaining way to learn about the reproductive systems, fertility and conception!
While documentaries are inspiring, informative, and thought provoking, sometimes you just need to watch some reality television and something you can binge watch. The Midwives is a show based in the UK, but there are several season on youtube! It provides insight into childbirth in another country, while also exemplifying the daily experience of working as a Midwife.
